Bio-Rad Outranks Other Protein Visualization Product Suppliers By Far
by Anonymous
ARLINGTON, VA – January 18, 2002 – Bio-Rad Laboratories is the company that scientists most closely associate with products for protein visualization. Pierce Chemical, Amersham Biosciences, Sigma and Molecular Probes rounded out the top five. This finding is just one of the many insights derived from “The Tools & Techniques of Protein Science: Catalyzing the Future of Proteomics,” a market research series based on eight separate surveys of scientists actively engaged in protein research. The series, which investigates every facet of the protein research market, was recently published by BioInformatics LLC, a leading provider of market research to the biotechnology industry. The eight titles in the series can be purchased separately or as a set and have yielded an enormous amount of data with important implications for the market’s suppliers.
“Protein Visualization,” the fourth of the eight reports, explores the issues faced by life scientists when visualizing proteins and specifically examines the products and technologies used in protein staining and/or labeling, detecting and imaging. According to Tamara Zemlo, PhD, Director of Scientific & Medical Communications for The Science Advisory Board, “the market for imaging systems is dominated by the needs of core and shared facilities, rather than the individual laboratory. This finding implies that purchasing patterns could possibly be influenced by competing research priorities.”
Findings in this report indicate that high image resolution is the number one factor that would influence a respondent’s lab to purchase one protein imaging system over another. Additionally, while respondents use different types of stains and labels depending upon the procedure they perform, the primary reason they select one particular stain over another is its ability to detect low quantities of proteins. Zemlo believes these findings to be significant because “as researchers’ expectations for obtaining high-quality imaging data increase, companies’ product lines will have to evolve to allow for the development of more powerful imaging instrumentation capable of increased sensitivity and finer resolution.”
More than a dozen industry leaders are already using this report and others in the series to assess their market position, create more effective marketing strategies and develop new products precisely tailored to the needs of the market.
